Avicii - I’m Tim: A moving documentary that resonates - but doesn’t tell the whole story

Publicerad den 1 januari 2025 av Metro Mode

Netflix’s documentary Avicii – I’m Tim is a powerful, emotional, and visually striking portrayal of Tim Bergling’s life. Through exclusive home videos, private voice recordings, and intimate interviews, we are brought closer to the person behind the global phenomenon Avicii — a musical genius who reshaped pop and EDM, yet struggled under immense pressure away from the spotlight.

The film is undeniably well-crafted and deeply affecting. At the same time, it raises important questions. How was the Avicii phenomenon truly built? And why don’t all the key contributors receive the recognition they deserve? Metro Mode takes a closer look at the documentary — its strengths, and what’s missing from the narrative.

An intimate portrait of Tim Bergling

Directed by Henrik Burman, the film follows Tim Bergling’s journey from a shy, music-obsessed teenager to a global superstar. Using material from Tim’s private archives, alongside interviews with family, friends, and collaborators such as Chris Martin and Aloe Blacc, the documentary paints a nuanced and deeply personal portrait.

We witness his passion for music, his relentless creativity, and his drive to evolve — but also the cost of life lived in constant public exposure. In the film, Tim reflects on how he gradually lost himself behind the Avicii persona:

“It was like I was never allowed to just be Tim.”

From passion to pressure

With tracks like LevelsWake Me Up, and Hey Brother, Avicii changed the music landscape. By blending EDM with pop and acoustic elements, he reached audiences far beyond the club scene and helped redefine what electronic music could be.

But success came at a high price. The documentary clearly shows how the relentless touring schedule and industry demands took a severe toll on Tim’s physical and mental health. His struggle with anxiety and addiction is portrayed with sensitivity, honesty, and heartbreaking clarity.

His father, Klas Bergling, plays a central role in the film, speaking openly about the family’s efforts to support Tim and break the destructive patterns that began to take hold. One particularly powerful scene depicts the intervention organized together with Tim’s then-manager Arash “Ash” Pournouri — a moment filled with pain, anger, and ultimately acceptance.

A life cut tragically short

On April 20, 2018, during a trip to Muscat, Oman, Tim Bergling took his own life at just 28 years old. His death shocked the world and became a stark reminder of the psychological pressures artists often endure behind closed doors.

The documentary treats Tim’s final days with great care and respect, allowing those closest to him to share their grief, confusion, and the profound emptiness he left behind.

Ash Pournouri – the invisible architect behind Avicii

One element Avicii – I’m Tim touches on, but never fully explores, is the crucial role played by Arash “Ash” Pournouri in shaping the Avicii phenomenon.

Ash was not only Avicii’s manager, but also the executive producer of all his albums and an active creative partner. He helped shape the sound, strategy, and visual identity that took Avicii from SoundCloud to the world’s biggest stages. Their collaboration was a true partnership, where creative vision met strategic thinking.

When Metro Mode interviewed Ash about the documentary, he spoke candidly about his grief – and his frustration with how the story of Avicii has long been told:

“It still hurts tremendously to see and hear about Tim. I miss him every day and struggle to find peace in my grief. But what almost hurts just as much is that it took so long for the objective truth to come out – a truth based on facts rather than speculation and rumors.”

Despite Ash’s central role, his contributions are consistently downplayed – both in Avicii – I’m Tim and in earlier portrayals. The narrative of the “lone genius” is often more marketable, but it oversimplifies reality. Behind every iconic artist lies a network of relationships, decisions, and unseen work that make success possible.

When storytelling becomes selective

Failing to fully acknowledge the collective effort behind Avicii leaves the story incomplete. Phenomena of this scale rarely emerge in isolation. Much like the partnerships between Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson or Scooter Braun and Justin Bieber, the relationship between Tim and Ash was fundamental to the outcome.

Avicii was not just a name – it was a sound, a brand, and a cultural movement. Understanding that requires seeing the full picture.

A legacy that lives on

Avicii – I’m Tim is a moving documentary that leaves a lasting impression and reinforces the importance of talking openly about mental health, pressure, and vulnerability. At the same time, it invites deeper reflection.

The truth is that Avicii was born at the intersection of Tim Bergling’s extraordinary musical talent and Ash Pournouri’s visionary leadership. Together, they created something that reshaped the music industry – and continues to resonate today.

And perhaps that’s where the documentary ultimately leaves us: with gratitude, sorrow, and the sense that the full story has yet to be told.
